The expansive Alexander Valley AVA acts as a gateway to neighboring Napa to the east and Mendocino to the north. It is a sprawling appellation with pockets of distinct microclimates and soils. The Harris Kratka Vineyard is located in the southern end of the valley, in the Chalk Hill AVA, just west of Mount Saint Helena. This vineyard is planted with Zinfandel, Carignane and Petite Sirah, all of which were fermented as one. There are even a few Muscat vines harvested along with the rest of the fruit. Here, on rocky loam soils, the Zinfandel experiences cool temperatures and a long ripening season, developing complex, intensely flavored fruit.
