While known primarily for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Russian River Valley’s third most popular varietal is Zinfandel. The cool climate AVA has been the historical planting ground for California Zinfandel with vineyards like this one, planted in the early 1900’s, still standing strong today. Zinfandel from the cool climate vineyards shows distinctive characteristics and subtle spices while retaining sufficient acid for balance and developing flavors to compliment the cooler climate. The clay soil on this section of the floor of the Russian River Valley retains warmth while forcing the century-old vines to dig deep into the soil for nutrients and water.
